Social networks are a great way to meet people, exchange ideas, discuss events and learn new things.  However, not all social networks are alike.  What might work on MySpace or Facebook doesn’t work on a social network like LibraryThing.

One of the longest lasting, and in my opinion most valuable, social networks is LinkedIn.  I’ve been a member since the site launched a few years ago, and it has led to a number of consulting opportunities, job offers and connections with affiliate marketers I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Almost as importantly, LinkedIn is the professional social network for most industries, including affiliate marketing.  You’ll find most of the affiliate managers from the networks listed there (you can search by companies) and I’ve found that reaching and staying in touch with people from the networks or various merchants is much easier through LinkedIn than just email or the forums alone.

So, if you’re not on LinkedIn, you should be.  It will only make you a better marketer and improve your bottom line.  It’s quick, easy and relatively painless.  Plus, there are a number of Firefox extensions, Outlook add-ons and various tools to help you stay in touch via the service.

If you do join, let me know by linking in to me at my profile here (Sam Harrelson on LinkedIn).
