I think this was one of the best podcasts you’ve done. There was a feeling like you found your voice and it was great. It really made me think about blogging without a business focus, or at least bringing that kind of voice into what we’re doing at my blog.
For the personal branding stuff, I think it depends on the brand. Look at Virgin. Richard Branson is a hero of mine. What I love about him is the will to risk when he follows his heart.

Thanks, Mike!
Good call on the Richard Branson connection. He’s def been able to expand his own “personal brand” to do crazy things like space tourism.
Would be a fun case study!

VERY interesting, thought provoking AFC. It’s the sort of personal question that I’ve been wrestling with for awhile now - and many times can take either side of the argument and make a case.
But I think the key takeaway for me here is the artistic element. I can’t get away from the image of the cowboy poet, gathering anecdotes, collecting wisdom and passing it on to the community that gathers at the saloon/campfire … and feeling content that listeners will disperse to share with their own community ( I wish there was a better word).
I’d much prefer to pull up a stool with the most well traveled character with a diverse collection of personal tales and songs, than the fellows who are just repeating something they’ve overheard.
Those walking dudes had their own personal brands…… and it is art.
Now, the question of leveraging the personal brand. As long as the gathered audience is aware of it and not deceived into contributing .. it’s perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with buying a guy a beer, or putting him up for the night along the trail as long as his songs were funny and you felt like you could trust him. But I agree with you Sam, and can’t figure it out yet - there has to be another way to move the entire audience forward as a collective that is mutually beneficial. To be determined.

like the music interludes to add atmosphere to the points you make
more artsy the better

Great points, Joe. It will probably always be a mystery to me, so that’s why it’s fun to ponder (”I reckon” in cowboy speak).
@45n5 Thanks, man… I like it too… keeps the listener more engaged and makes things more manageable, I hope. We’ll see.
