Email newsletters are long past their prime in terms of technology and web2.0 social interaction. However, there is still a market and receptive audience for newsletters. So, when building your affiliate program, experiment with tried and trusted ways of web1.0 interaction such as the email newsletter…

For discussion lists, I’ve been using mailman - which is sufficient, but very painful to manage and/or migrate. I’ve also tried FeedBurner’s email list feature in conjunction with some of our more popular feeds, but its simplicity is sometimes frustrating. For power, I’ve gone with WhatCounts. Haven’t paid much attention to the world of email newsletters in a while… everybody’s been moving to the Web.

Since my company is mainly focused on organic search engine optimization and social media marketing, it’s rare that I address e-mail marketing; there can be such a negative stigma to it. But, like an RSS reader, receiving opt-in emails is an effective time management technique for consumers and end-users and can be a truly effective content delivery format for marketers. In an increasingly clutter filled world, I believe more and more people will rely on their opt-in emails to make key purchasing decisions and as such, thought it important to begin to dig a bit deeper into how email can be used more effectively as a marketing tool.
