Like Shawn Collins, I like to stay up on the latest literature and articles on affiliate marketing. He’s done a great review of a new book entitled Affiliate Millions.  This is definitely a helpful post!

So if you get Affiliate Millions, take the advice with a grain of salt. It’s a decent introductory book for the newest of new newbies.

Affiliate Millions Book Report - Shawn Collins

I have a confession to make… I don’t read “business books” or ebooks.

I’ve read maybe three in my life:

• The Long Tail by Chris Anderson
• Shawn’s Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants
• and I just bought and read Tim Ferriss’ 4-Hour Workweek

Honestly, I think business books are a little silly. OK… maybe not silly, but they all seem rather pedantic and common sense to me. I love reading (here’s my LibraryThing profile which is no where near complete but a good approximation), but I don’t have hours to devote to offline reading.

I’m much more likely to read a book about physics or history or sociology and learn more about marketing by studying the theory of electromagnetism or kinetic energy than I do from reading a business book. But, that’s me. I have a rather wide academic background and I’m normally reading at least four or five different books on different subjects at any given time (ADHD? probably).

Anyway, I had an interesting conversation with a newer full-time affiliate today from Charlotte, NC (and a candidate for one of the two blogging editor positions here) who asked me what my favorite business books were. I couldn’t tell her because I didn’t have any.

When someone asks me a question that stumps me (which happens frequently), I automatically like them…she’ll probably get the job. However, I told her I would blog about it and find out from you all which business books newer affiliates should be reading to help guide them.

So, what are your favorite business books?

Shawn Collins‘ classic opus “Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants” is the Homeric epic of our industry. This isn’t because of the quality of prose, but for its long term impact. Most new affiliate managers on the network or merchant side are handed a copy and told to read, recite and memorize (and sleep with it under their pillows).

The trouble is that our industry is constantly evolving and the book is going on six years old at this point. Published in the halcyon days of the early part of this century, the book still offers key foundational principles, but needs updating to cope with some of the tremendous changes that have occurred. We all have begged Shawn for an update, and it looks like we’re getting to him in our persistence.

The paperback and electronic versions are still out there for purchase, but they’re pretty stale at this point. So I’ve decided to bring the book to affiliate managers the world over for free as a video book.
