Very interesting. I always get stuck thinking advertisers are looking for sales, but of course sometimes they’re looking for branding or good PR, which is where being a site’s “sponsor” really comes in. You have to build a site they’d want to be affiliated with - whether for sales or for branding - and then go out and find them.
That gives me a whole new angle to consider when pitching my blogs to advertisers. Instead of (for example) promoting a profile of your readers and their shopping habits, you could emphasize what their passions and values are (which is actually a lot easier to determine, if they comment), and advertisers who want to be associates with those passions and values may find that being associated with your site is just the branding they need.
